WALLPAPER INSTALLATION — WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

Wallcovering is unforgiving. A wall that hides minor imperfections under a coat of matte paint will show every one of them through a vinyl or a grasscloth, and a seam that is 2mm out of plumb at the ceiling is 20mm out by the time it reaches the floor. P&G Renovation installs and removes wallcovering for commercial and residential clients across the GTA — hotel corridors, office lobbies and boardrooms, healthcare and institutional interiors, restaurant feature walls and residential accent walls — with the wall preparation treated as a separate, costed part of the job rather than an afterthought.

We work with the full range of materials, and each behaves differently. Type II commercial vinyl is the workhorse of hospitality and healthcare — durable, scrubbable and forgiving. Non-woven and paste-the-wall papers are dimensionally stable and by far the easiest to remove later, which is why we recommend them for anyone likely to change their mind. Traditional pre-pasted and paste-the-paper products need controlled booking time so they expand fully before hanging. Grasscloth, silk and natural fibres have no printed repeat and will always show subtle panel-to-panel colour variation, so they need to be sequenced, reverse-hung where appropriate, and handled with clean hands and immediate paste removal. Digitally printed murals are numbered panels with a single correct order and no margin for error.

Preparation determines the result. Old wallcovering is stripped with steam or enzyme solution and the residual adhesive is washed off completely — adhesive left behind reactivates under new paste and telegraphs through. Damaged drywall paper is sealed. Holes and joints are filled and sanded, and where the specification calls for it we skim-coat the wall to a level 5 finish. Every wall is then primed with a dedicated wallcovering primer that seals the substrate, provides slip for positioning and, crucially, allows removal in years to come without destroying the drywall.

Layout is planned before the first strip goes up. We measure the room, calculate the number of drops with the pattern repeat included, decide where the least-visible seam will fall, and strike a plumb line rather than trusting a corner. Pattern matching is verified drop by drop, seams are double-cut or butted depending on material, and edges are rolled without squeezing paste onto the face. Switch plates and outlets are cut precisely, and mismatched paste squeeze-out is wiped immediately, not left to dry on a grasscloth.

For commercial clients we also handle scheduled cycles: hotel floor-by-floor recovering, office refresh programmes, and healthcare corridor wallcovering rated for infection-control cleaning. Order quantities include attic stock so future repairs come from the same dye lot, and we keep product and batch records on file.

OUR WALLPAPER INSTALLATION PROCESS, STEP BY STEP

    1

    Consultation and take-off

Measure every wall, factor the pattern repeat, calculate rolls plus waste and attic stock, and confirm material suitability for the room's moisture and traffic.

    2

    Removal of existing wallcovering

Steam or enzyme stripping, complete adhesive washdown, and assessment of any drywall paper damage exposed underneath.

    3

    Substrate repair

Fill, tape, sand and — where specified — skim-coat to a level 5 finish, because wallcovering telegraphs every flaw beneath it.

    4

    Wallcovering primer

Dedicated primer/sizer applied to seal the wall, give working slip, and make future removal possible without wrecking the drywall.

    5

    Layout and plumb

Seam positions planned to fall in the least conspicuous locations; plumb line struck; drops cut in sequence with the repeat verified.

    6

    Hanging

Correct booking time observed, panels hung in sequence, seams butted or double-cut, air worked out, edges rolled, paste wiped immediately.

    7

    Finish and inspection

Trim at ceiling, baseboard and outlets, reinstall plates, inspect every seam under raking light, and document batch numbers for future repairs.

MATERIALS & COATING SYSTEMS WE USE

We spec the coating to the substrate, not to the invoice. These are the systems and brands our crews work with day to day.

    Commercial vinyl

Type I and Type II wallcovering rated for hospitality, healthcare and high-traffic corridors — scrubbable and disinfectant-tolerant.

    Non-woven and paste-the-wall

Dimensionally stable, no booking required, and strippable in one piece later — our default recommendation for residential work.

    Natural and specialty

Grasscloth, sisal, silk, cork and metallic finishes, sequenced and hung with the panel variation planned rather than fought.

    Murals and digital prints

Custom-printed numbered panel sets, installed in strict sequence with the pattern verified before the first panel is committed.

    Primers and adhesives

Roman and Zinsser wallcovering primers and sizings, with clear strippable, heavy-duty clay and pre-mixed vinyl-over-vinyl adhesives selected by material weight.

    Removal

Steamers, enzyme-based strippers and scoring tools, with full adhesive washdown before any new material or paint is applied.

WALLPAPER INSTALLATION — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does the old wallpaper have to come off before new wallcovering goes up?

Almost always yes. Hanging over existing wallcovering traps the old seams, and the moisture in fresh adhesive frequently lifts the layer underneath, taking your new material with it. The one exception is a sound, well-bonded commercial vinyl being covered with a vinyl-over-vinyl adhesive system, which we would only recommend after inspecting it.

How do I know how many rolls to order?

We do the take-off for you. Roll count depends on wall area, drop height, and the pattern repeat — a large repeat can add 20% or more waste. We always add attic stock from the same dye lot so a future repair matches, because dye lots change and a later roll will not.

Can wallcovering be used in bathrooms and kitchens?

Yes, with the right material. Type II commercial vinyl and modern non-woven products handle humidity well when the wall is properly primed and there is adequate ventilation. Delicate grasscloth and silk in a room with a shower is a losing battle, and we will tell you so before you buy it.

Will removing it later damage my walls?

Not if it was installed over a proper wallcovering primer. That primer is the barrier between the adhesive and the drywall paper, and it is why professionally hung material strips cleanly years later while material hung on bare drywall tears the paper facing off.
