CABINET PAINTING — WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

Refinishing kitchen cabinets is the highest-return renovation we do. A full cabinet replacement in the GTA routinely runs $18,000 to $40,000 and takes weeks with the kitchen out of service. A professional spray refinish typically lands at a fraction of that, keeps your existing boxes and layout, and delivers a hard, factory-smooth finish in under a week. The catch is that cabinet finishing is genuinely difficult work — it is closer to automotive refinishing than to wall painting, and it fails visibly and quickly when it is done with a brush, a hardware-store enamel, or without proper degreasing.

P&G Renovation refinishes cabinets in Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Markham and across the GTA using a controlled spray process. Doors, drawer fronts and hardware come off and are labelled and mapped so every piece returns to the opening it came from. Boxes and face frames are finished in place inside a sealed containment with negative-air filtration so no atomized coating reaches the rest of your home. Doors are sprayed off-site or in a dedicated on-site booth, on racks, both faces, in dust-controlled conditions.

Preparation carries the finish. Kitchen cabinets accumulate a decade of cooking grease and silicone-based cleaners, and coatings do not stick to either. Every surface is washed with a degreaser and then a solvent wipe, scuff-sanded to break the existing sheen, and vacuumed and tack-clothed. Thermofoil, melamine, laminate and factory-conversion-varnish finishes each demand a specific bonding primer — this is the step where DIY and low-bid jobs fail, usually within a few months, and usually first around the sink and the handles.

Oak and other open-grain species can be either grain-filled for a modern flat look or left with the grain showing; we show you samples of both before starting. Damaged corners, chipped edges and old hardware holes are filled and re-drilled where you are changing pulls. We spray two to three finish coats of waterborne alkyd or catalyzed acrylic-urethane enamel, sanding between coats, for a levelled surface with no brush marks or roller stipple.

The finish needs time to reach full hardness. Doors are rehung and adjusted after the coating has set, but full cure takes two to three weeks, and we give written care instructions: no harsh degreasers, no abrasive pads, no adhesive bumpers applied too early, and gentle handling for the first fortnight. Handled that way, a properly sprayed cabinet finish holds up to daily kitchen use for a decade or more.

OUR CABINET PAINTING PROCESS, STEP BY STEP

    1

    Assessment and colour selection

We check substrate type (wood, MDF, thermofoil, laminate), door condition, hinge type and grain, then sample colours and sheens on a spare door or drawer.

    2

    Removal and labelling

Every door, drawer front and hinge removed, numbered and mapped to its opening; hardware bagged by location.

    3

    Containment

Sealed zip-wall containment around the kitchen with negative-air filtration; counters, floors, appliances and adjacent rooms fully protected.

    4

    Degrease, sand, fill

Two-stage degreasing, solvent wipe, full scuff-sand, dents and old hardware holes filled, edges repaired, everything vacuumed and tacked.

    5

    Bonding primer

Substrate-specific bonding primer sprayed on all faces and edges, sanded smooth once dry; grain-filling here if a flat modern look is wanted.

    6

Two to three sprayed finish coats

Waterborne alkyd or catalyzed urethane enamel sprayed on racks and in place, with inter-coat sanding for a levelled, dead-smooth film.

    7

    Reinstall and adjust

Doors rehung, hinges adjusted for even reveals, hardware installed, felt bumpers applied at the right cure stage, kitchen cleaned and handed back.

MATERIALS & COATING SYSTEMS WE USE

We spec the coating to the substrate, not to the invoice. These are the systems and brands our crews work with day to day.

    Finish enamels

Benjamin Moore Advance waterborne alkyd, Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel and ProClassic, and catalyzed acrylic-urethane systems for maximum hardness.

    Bonding primers

INSL-X STIX, Zinsser B-I-N and Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond — selected by substrate, essential on thermofoil, laminate and conversion-varnish factory finishes.

    Grain filling

High-build primer-surfacer or dedicated grain filler on oak and ash when a flat contemporary finish is requested.

    Equipment

HVLP and fine-finish airless spray systems with the correct fine-finish tips, plus negative-air containment and filtration inside the home.

    Sheens

Satin and semi-gloss are the practical choices for kitchens — cleanable, forgiving of fingerprints, and true to how cabinetry is finished at the factory.

CABINET PAINTING — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will sprayed cabinets really hold up to daily kitchen use?

Yes, when the prep and product are right. A degreased, scuff-sanded, bonding-primed cabinet finished with two to three coats of waterborne alkyd or catalyzed urethane is a hard, washable film that handles a decade of normal kitchen use. What does not hold up is enamel brushed straight onto greasy factory finish — that is the job that chips around the handles within a year.

Can you paint thermofoil, melamine or laminate cabinets?

Thermofoil, melamine and laminate can all be refinished provided the surface is intact — peeling or bubbling thermofoil has to be repaired or the door replaced first. Each requires a specific bonding primer, which we select after identifying the substrate on site.

Do we have to move out of the kitchen for a week?

No. We contain the work zone, and countertops and boxes are typically back in service within two to three days while the doors are still curing on racks. Plan for limited use of the kitchen rather than no use of it, and expect the doors back at the end of the week.

Can you change the door style or add new hardware at the same time?

We can install new hardware, fill and re-drill for different pull spacing, and finish new doors ordered to match your existing boxes. Changing the door style itself means new doors — we are happy to finish them in the same colour so the whole kitchen reads as one piece of work.
